Workers from Nepal significantly and irreplaceably contribute to the domestic assistance industry (roles: house aids, housekeepers, nurses, etc.) of Gulf Countries. For those domestic workers who are desperate to earn due to a lack of well paying suitable jobs in Nepal, the Gulf appears as an attractive destination, where salaries for domestic workers can be close to $400 per month. However, due to an increase in the accounts of vulnerable Nepali women being treated extremely poorly (subjected to long working hours, controlled mobility under the “Kafala” system - where employers often also had legal control over the women’s ability to change employment), the Nepali government was forced to address the gender and labour issue. Therefore, the Nepali government, with a stated motive of assisting the condition of Nepali women, introduced a policy that banned its citizens from travelling to Gulf countries to become domestic workers.
